Erode District is a district of the state of Tamil Nadu. Erode is the district headquarters. Until the year 1996, Erode district was called as Periyar District. Erode district has a population of 22,59,608 as of 2011. The population is dominated by the Kongu Vellalar community. Erode District was a part of Coimbatore District until September 17, 1979.
The district is bounded by Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka to the north, and by Kaveri River to the east. Across the Kaveri lies Salem, Namakkal and Karur districts. Tirupur District lies immediately to the south, and Coimbatore and the Nilgiris district lies to the west.
Erode District comprises of two revenue divisions namely Erode and Gobichettipalayam. Erode District consists of five Taluks namely Bhavani, Erode, Gobichettipalayam, Perundurai, and Sathyamangalam.
