Famous Births

1888 - Venkatarama Ramalingam Pillai was born at Namakkal, Madras Presidency. He was a Tamil poet and freedom fighter. He is well known for his poems about independence.

1910 - Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, FRS was born in Lahore, British India. He was an Indian-American astrophysicist who, with William A. Fowler, won the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics for key discoveries that led to the currently accepted theory on the later evolutionary stages of massive stars. The Chandrasekhar limit is named after him. He was the nephew of Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930.

1920 - Pandurang Vaijnath Shastri Athavale was born. He was a philosopher, spiritual leader, social reformer and Hinduism reformist. He founded the Swadhyay Parivar organization. He received Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, and Padma Vibhushan.
