Famous Births

1899 - Acharya Baldev Upadhyaya was born. He was a renowned Hindi, Sanskrit scholar, literary historian, essayist and critic. He wrote numerous books, collections of essays and a historical outline of Sanskrit literature. He was honoured with Padma Bushan Award.

1902 - Kota Shivaram Karanth was born in Saligrama, Udupi district, Karnataka. He was a prominent Kannada writer, social activist, environmentalist, Yakshagana artist, and film maker. He was honored with Padma Bhushan by Government of India, which later he returned in protest against the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi.

1906 - R. K. Narayan (Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami) was born in Madras. He was a author of the famous series of books about people and their interactions in an imagined town in India called Malgudi. He received Padma Vibhushan, Sahitya Akademi Award, AC Benson Medal, and Padma Bhushan.

1964 - Guru Dutt (Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone) died at the age of 39 in Mumbai. He was a legendary Bollywood film director, producer and actor.

1992 - Bharat Bhushan died in Mumbai. He was a Bollywood actor, scriptwriter and producer. He was remembered for playing title role in Baiju Bawra in 1952.

2007 - S. R. Bommai (Somappa Rayappa Bommai) died at the age of 84 at Hubli, Karnataka. He was the 11th Chief Minister of Karnataka . He also held the position of Human Resource Development Minister in the United Front government from 1996 to 1998.
