1884 - Dr. Pandurang Sadashiv Khankhoje was born. He was a freedom fighter, scholar, agricultural scientist and historian. He was one of the founding members of the Ghadar Party.
1888 - Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born. He was a physicist whose work was influential in the growth of science in India. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 for the discovery that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the light that is deflected changes in wavelength. This phenomenon is now called Raman scattering and is the result of the Raman effect.
1965 - Mirza Basheer-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad better known by the Ahmadiyya community as The Promised Son was died at the age of 76 in Rabwah, Pakistan. He was Khalifatul Masih II, head of the Ahmadiyya Community.
1990 - Lawrence George Durrell died at the age of 78. He was an expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer. His most famous work is the tetralogy the Alexandria Quartet.
2000 - Chidambaram Subramaniam (known as CS) died at the age of 90. He was independence activist, state minister, central minister and governor of state. He received Bharat Ratna in 1998.
