Famous Births

1914 - Jyoti Basu was born in Calcutta. He was a Bengali politician belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) who served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister of any state of India.

Famous Deaths

2006 - Raja Rao died at the age of 97 in Austin, Texas, United States. He was a writer of English language novels and short stories. He was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Award, Neustadt International Prize for Literature, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.

2007 - Chandra Shekhar Singh died at the age of 80 in New Delhi. He was the eighth Prime Minister of India. He also held the positions of Minister of Defence and Minister of Home Affairs.
