1925 - Mohan Rakesh was born in Amritsar, British India. He was one of the pioneers of the Nai Kahani (New Story) literary movement of the Hindi literature in the 1950s. He made significant contribution to novel, short story, travelogue, criticism, memoirs and drama. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

1926 - Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra was born in Raghurajpur, Puri, Orissa. He was a guru and proponent of Odissi dance who is credited for its revival. He has received many awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, Padma Vibhushan, and Kalidas Samman.

1929 - Saeed Jaffrey OBE was born in Malerkotla, Punjab. He is an Indian-born British actor who has acted in many British movies. He won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his role in Shatranj Ke Khiladi.

1936 - Jyotindra Nath Dixit was born in Chennai. He was a diplomat who served as Foreign Secretary. He was the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the time of his death.

1975 - Harris Jayaraj was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is a film composer. He has composed music for Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. He has won four Filmfare Awards South for Best Music Director and many other awards.

Famous Deaths

1994 - Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal (Sage of Kanchi) passed away at the age of 99 at Kanchi mutt. He was the 68th Jagadguru in the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. He is usually referred to as Paramacharya, Mahaswami or Maha Periyavaal.

2003 - Mahadeva Subramania Mani died in Bangalore. He was an entomologist especially famous for his studies on high altitude entomology.
