1818 - Treaty of Mandeswar brings an end to the Third Anglo-Maratha War, ending the dominance of Marathas.

1910 - G. N. Balasubramaniam (known as GNB) was born in Tanjore District, Madras Presidency, British India. He was a vocalist in the Carnatic tradition. He became the first superstar of Carnatic music.

1959 - Kapil Dev (Kapil Dev Ramlal Nikhanj) was born in Chandigarh Punjab. He was a former cricketer and captain of the Indian cricket team which won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Wisden named him as the Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002. He also received Padma Sri, Padma Bushan, Arjuna Awards and inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.

1966 - A.R. Rahman (Allahrakka Rahman and born as A. S. Dileep Kumar) was born in Madras. He has composed music for Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Hollywood movies. He has won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, four National Film Awards, 15 Filmfare Awards, 13 Filmfare Awards South and many other awards.

1996 - Kishan Shrikanth (known as Kishan SS or Master Kishan) was born in Bangalore. He is a film actor and director. His name included in Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest director of a professionally made feature length film.

Famous Deaths

1847 - Tyagaraju (born as Kakarla Tyagabrahmam, also known as Tyagayya and Tyagarajar) died at the age of 79. He was one of the greatest composers of Carnatic music. He along with Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri forms the Trinity of Carnatic music.

1885 - Bharatendu Harishchandra died at the age of 34 in Varanasi. He is known as the father of modern Hindi literature as well as Hindi theatre. He is considered one of the greatest Hindi writers of modern India.
