Historical Events

1607 - Prince Khurram (Mughal emperor Shah Jahan) married Arjumand Banu Begum at the age of 15. Arjumand Banu Begum was the daughter of a Persian noble.

1631 - Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Prince Khurram (Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan) died in Burhanpur giving birth to her fourteenth child.

1653 - The Eastern Church in India cuts itself off from colonial Portuguese tutelage at the Coonan Cross Oath (Koonan Kurishu Satyam). This was a public avowal by members of the Saint Thomas Christian community of Kerala that they would not submit to Portuguese dominance in ecclesiastical and secular life.

2012 - President Pratibha Patil inaugurates new SHAR Mission Control Centre.

1831 - Savitribai Jyotirao Phule was born at Naigaon village in Satara district. She was the wife of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. She was a social reformer and worked for improving women's rights in India during the British Rule.

1921 - Chetan Anand was born in Lahore, British India. He was an acclaimed Hindi film producer, screenwriter and director. His film Neecha Nagar received Palme d'Or award. He is the elder brother of Bollywood legendary hero Dev Anand.

1931 - Yashawant Dinkar Phadke (Y. D. Phadke) was born in Solapur. He was a historian and a political activist.

1981 - Naresh Iyer was in Chennai. He is a playback singer who has rendered songs in several languages. His song Roobaroo from Rang De Basanti won him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

1987 - Anchal Joseph was born in New Delhi. She is an Indian-American fashion model and actress. She competed on America's Next Top Model, Cycle 7.

Famous Deaths

1871 - Kuriakose Elias Chavara, T.O.C.D. was died in Koonammavu, Cochin, British India at the age of 65. He was the co-founder and first Prior General of the first congregation for men in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, now known as the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate.

1972 - Mohan Rakesh was died in Delhi at the age of 46. He was one of the pioneers of the Nai Kahani (New Story) literary movement of the Hindi literature in the 1950s. He made significant contribution to novel, short story, travelogue, criticism, memoirs and drama. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

2005 - Jyotindra Nath Dixit was died at the age of 68 in New Delhi. He was a diplomat who served as Foreign Secretary. He was the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the time of his death.

2013 - M.S. Gopalakrishnan (MSG) died in Chennai at the age of 81. He was a violinist of Carnatic music. He was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Sri, Kalaimamani, Sangeetha Kalanidhi and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards.
