1898 - Vishnu Sakharam Khandekar (V. S. Sakharam Khandekar) was born. He was a prominent Marathi writer. He was honored with Padma Bhushan Award and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.

1919 - Dharam Singh was born in Gandiwind. He was a field hockey player who was part of the gold medal winning team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. He was the team coach of the team that won the gold medal at Tokyo in 1964.

1935 - Soumitra Chatterjee (or Soumitra Chattopadhyay) was born in Krishnanagar. He is an famous Bengali actor who worked with the great Bengali film director Satyajit Ray. He received Padma Bhushan Award and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

1984 - Karun Chandhok was born in Madras. He is a racing driver who competed for Hispania Racing in Formula One in 2010. He also drove in the GP2 Series for three years winning two races.

1597 - Maharana Pratap died at the age of 57. He was a Rajput ruler of Mewar. He is famous for his qualities of bravery and chivalry and his fight against Mughal emperor Akbar.

1905 - Devendranath Tagore died at the age of 87 in Calcutta. He was a Hindu philosopher and religious reformer, active in the Brahmo Samaj. He was one of the founders of the Brahmo Religion.

1960 - Ram Chandra Gopal "Dadasaheb" Torne died. He was the first Indian to make an Indian-language feature film. He made his first film Shree pundalik in 1912, just about a year before Dhundiraj Govind "Dadasaheb" Phalke made his first film.
