1924 - The Gateway of India in Bombay was opened by the Viceroy, the Earl of Reading. It was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in December 1911.
1910 - R. Venkataraman (Ramaswamy Venkataraman) was born in Rajamadam, Tamil Nadu. He was a lawyer, freedom fighter and politician. He was the eighth President of India. He also served as Vice President of India, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Finance.
1910 - Motilal was born in Shimla. He was a Bollywood actor. He won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award twice.
1919 - I. K. Gujral (Inder Kumar Gujral) was born in Jhelum, Punjab, British India. He served as the 12th Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998. He also held the portfolios of Minister of Finance and Minister of External Affairs in Central Government.
1979 - Dhyan Chand died at the age of 74 in Delhi. He was field hockey player who played for India and widely regarded as the greatest player of all time. He was in the India team that won three Olympic gold medals. Chand's birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. He received Padma Bushan.
