1912 - Vedanayakam Samuel Azariah became the first Anglican bishop in India. He was consecrated in St. Paul's Cathedral, Calcutta.
1929 - All India Congress in Lahore demanded Indian independence. Under Jawaharlal Nehru National Congress passed a resolution calling for virtual independence within a year.
2012 - Delhi gang rape victim, who was moved to Singapore for further treatment on 26 December, died due to multiple organ failure. Peaceful protests was again held in Delhi where people came in to mourn the death and demanded stringent punishment for the culprits.
1900 - Dinanath Mangeshkar was born in Mangeshi. He was a prominent Marathi theatre actor, Natya Sangeet musician and Hindustani classical vocalist. He is the father of famous Bollywood singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.
1904 - Kannada writer and poet Kuppali Venkatappagowda Puttappa was born in Hirekodige, Koppa taluk, Chikmagalur district, Karnataka. He is known by the pen name Kuvempu or by K. V. Puttappa. He is regarded as the greatest poet of 20th century Kannada literature.
1917 - Film director Ramanand Sagar (Chandramauli Chopra) was born Lahore, Punjab, British India. He is known for making the popular Ramayan television series.
1942 - Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna (Jatin Khanna) was born in Burewala, West Punjab, British India. He was an actor, film producer and politician. He is regarded as the first superstar and the original superstar of Indian cinema.
1949 - Syed Kirmani (Syed Mujtaba Hussain Kirmani) was born in Madras. He played cricket for India and Karnataka as a wicket-keeper. He received the Padmasri Award in 1982.
