1912 - The India National (Missionary) Conference convened (December 18-21) in Calcutta. One of its principal conclusions recognized the need for good Christian literature in India.

Famous Births

1824 - The Reverend Lal Behari Dey was born. He was a Bengali journalist who converted to Christianity and became a Christian missionary himself.

1955 - Vijay Mallya, is an industrialist and two time member of parliament was born in Kolkata. He is the chairman of United Breweries Group (Kingfisher) and Kingfisher airlines.

1971 - Barkha Dutt, a television journalist and columnist was born in New Delhi. She is currently the group editor with NDTV (as of December 2012). She received Padma Shri Award in 2008.

1985 - Bollywood heroine Sneha Ullal was born in Muscat, Oman. She has also appeared in Telugu films.

Famous Deaths

1927 - Freedom figther Ram Prasad Bismil was hanged at Gorakhpur Jail, United Province, British India. He participated in Mainpuri Conspiracy of 1918, and the Kakori conspiracy of 1925 against British Empire.

2004 - Vijay Hazare (Vijay Samuel Hazare) was born. He was the captain of the Indian cricket team in 14 matches between 1951 and 1953. India won its first ever Test cricket win against England under his captaincy.
