1612 - At the battle at Surat, English fleet defeat Portuguese

1911 - The Diocese of Kottayam (Kerala) was erected for the Knanaya Catholic people of the Syro-Malabar Church. In 2005 the diocese was raised to the rank of Archdiocese.

2003 - Mayawati's third term as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh ends.

Famous Births

1905 - Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad, United Provinces, British India. He was field hockey player who played for India and widely regarded as the greatest player of all time. He was in the India team that won three Olympic gold medals. Chand's birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. He received Padma Bushan.

Famous Deaths

1911 - Asaf Jah VI Mir Mahboob Ali Khan Siddiqi died. He was the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad. He ruled Hyderabad state between 1869 and 1911.
