1608 - First English convoy lands at Surat.

1690 - The fort and trading settlement of Sutanuti, which later became Calcutta, was founded on the Hooghly River by the English East India Company following signing of an Anglo-Moghul treaty.

2012 - Bollywood film "Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi" directed by Bela Sehgal starring Boman Irani and Farah Khan was released.

Famous Births

1918 - Sikander Bakht was born. He was a politician and Freedom Fighter. He was one of the prominent leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

Famous Deaths

1908 - Shivaram Rajguru (Shivaram Hari Rajguru) was born at Khed near Pune. He was a freedom fighter. He along with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev took part in the murder of a British police officer J.P. Saunders.

1972 - Venkatarama Ramalingam Pillai died at the age of 83. He was a Tamil poet and freedom fighter. He is well known for his poems about independence.
