1872 - Abdullah Yusuf Ali was born. He was an Islamic scholar who translated the Quran into English. His translation of the Quran is one of the most widely known and used in the English-speaking world.

1891 - Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born. He was a jurist, political leader, philosopher, anthropologist, historian, orator, economist, teacher, editor, writer, revolutionary and a revivalist for Buddhism in India. He was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.

1921 - Subodh Mukerji was born. He was a famous Bengali film producer and director. He was the brother of the producer director Sashadhar Mukherjee.

Famous Deaths

1950 - Spiritual master Ramana Maharshi (Venkataraman Iyer) was died at Sri Ramana Ashram in Arunachala at age 70.

1962 - Mokshagundam Visveswaraiah died at Bangalore. He was a notable engineer, scholar, statesman and the Diwan of Mysore. He received Bharat Ratna.
