1802 - Great Trigonometric Survey of India began with the measurement of a baseline near Madras. The Great Trigonometric Survey was a project of the Survey of India throughout most of the 19th century. Demarcation of the British territories in India and the measurement of the height of the Himalayan giants: Everest, K2, and Kanchenjunga were done as part of it.
1894 - Ghanshyam Das (G.D. Birla) was born in Pilani village, Rajputana. He was a businessman and member of the Birla Family. Birla was a close associate and a supporter of Mahatma Gandhi.
1949 - Birbal Sahni died. He was a paleobotanist who studied the fossils of the Indian subcontinent. He was also a geologist who took an interest in archaeology. He founded the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany in Lucknow.
1995 - Morarji Ranchhodji Desai died at the age of 99 in New Delhi. He was a freedom fighter and the fourth Prime Minister of India. He was the first Prime Minister to head the first non-Congress Government.
