December 16 - A female physiotherapy student was beaten and gang raped in Delhi when she and a male companion boarded a bus in South Delhi in the evening. Public protests took place in Delhi, where thousands of protesters clashed with police, and other force units. Similar protests also took place through out the country in major cities.

December 23 - Sachin Tendulkar announced his retirement from ODIs. He had played 463 ODIs scoring 18,426 runs with 49 centuries and 96 half centuries.

December 29 - Delhi gang rape victim, who was moved to Singapore for further treatment on 26 December, died due to multiple organ failure. Peaceful protests was again held in Delhi where people came in to mourn the death and demanded stringent punishment for the culprits.

Famous Deaths

January 24 - Sukumar Azhikode died at the age of 85 in Thrissur, Kerala. He was a writer, critic and orator. He was a scholar in Sanskrit, Malayalam, and English languages.

July 12 - Dara Singh (Deedar Singh) died in Mumbai at the age of 83. He was a wrestler and actor. He acted in Punjabi and Hindi films and in television. He was the Rajya Sabha MP between 2003 and 2009. He was also president of the Jat Mahasabha.

July 23 - Lakshmi Sahgal died at the age of 97. She was a freedom fighter, an officer of the Indian National Army, and the Minister of Women's Affairs in the Azad Hind government.

August 14 - Vilasrao Deshmukh (Vilasrao Dagadojirao Deshmukh) died in Chennai at the age of 67. He was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He was also the Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences.

October 21 - Yash Chopra (Yash Raj Chopra) died at the age of 80 in Mumbai. He was a prominent Bollywood director, script writer and film producer. He directed and produced many block buster Bollywood films. He received Padma Bhushan, Legion of Honour (highest civilian honour of France), Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and many National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards.

October 25 - Actor and comedian Jaspal Singh Bhatti died.

November 17 - Bal Thackeray (Bal Keshav Thackeray) died in Mumbai at the age of 86. He founded the Shiv Sena party in Maharashtra. He began his professional career as a cartoonist.

November 30 - I. K. Gujral (Inder Kumar Gujral) died at the age of 92. He served as the 12th Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998. He also held the portfolios of Minister of Finance and Minister of External Affairs in Central Government.

December 11 - Pandit Ravi Shankar died in La Jolla, San Diego, California, United States at the age of 92. He was an musician and composer of sitar. He received Bharat Ratna and three Grammy Awards.
