January 17 - Jyoti Basu died at the age of 95 in Kolkata. He was a Bengali politician belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) who served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister of any state of India.

July 9 - Kovilan (Kandanisseri Vattomparambil Velappan Ayyappan) died in Kunnamkulam, Thrissur. He was a Malayalam language novelist. He received Kerala Sahitya Academy award, Kendra Sahitya Academy award, Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, and Sahitya Academy Membership.

December 20 - Nalini Jaywant died at the age of 84 in Mumbai. She was a Bollywood actress who acted in films in the 1940s and 1950s.

December 23 - Kannoth Karunakaran was died at the age of 92 in Thiruvananthapuram, Keralaa. He was a senior prominent politician from Kerala belonging to Indian National Congress party and was a close aide of India Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
