January 26 - India's first Multimedia Museum was opened at Nalanda Museum in Nalanda, which recreates the history of Nalanda using a 3D animation film narrated by Shekhar Suman.

October 12 - Saint Alphonsa, Sister Alphonsa Muttathupadathu, was Vatican City by Pope Benedict XVI. She became first woman of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint.

December 5 - Vilasrao Deshmukh's second term as Chief Minister of Maharashtra ends.

May 19 - M. G. K. Menon (Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon) was born. He is a physicist and policy maker. He had a prominent role in Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

January 1 - Pratap Chandra Chunder was born. He was a cabinet minister with education and social welfare portfolios in the Morarji Desai Ministry from 1977 to 1980.

January 11 - Yashawant Dinkar Phadke (Y. D. Phadke) was died at the age of 77. He was a historian and a political activist.

February 1 - Rustom Khurshedji Karanjia died in Mumbai at the age of 95. He was a journalist and editor. He was founder and owner editor of Blitz a tabloid weekly published from Mumbai.

February 5 - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (Mahesh Prasad Varma) was died at the age of 90 in Vlodrop, Limburg, Netherlands. He developed the Transcendental Meditation technique and was the leader and guru of a worldwide organization that has been characterized in multiple ways including as a new religious movement and as non-religious.

February 9 - Baba Amte (Dr. Murlidhar Devidas Amte) died at the age of 94 at Anandwan, Maharashtra. He was a social worker and social activist who worked for the rehabilitation of the poor people suffering from leprosy.

February 25 - Hans Raj Khanna died at the age of 95 in New Delhi. He was a judge of the Supreme Court of India from 1971 to 1977. Two of his judgements form the basis of modern constitutional law, decades after they were delivered.

March 20 - Sobhan Babu (Uppu Sobhana Chalapathi Rao) was died in Chennai at the age of 71. He is one of the top Telugu film heroes. He received Rashtrapathi Award for Best Classical Film Actor/Hero, five Nandi Awards for Best Actor, and four Filmfare Awards for Best Actor - Telugu.

March 25 - K. T. Muhammed (popularly known as KT) died at Calicut. He was a Malayalam playwright and screenwriter. His famous works include Idhu Bhumiyanu (This is the Earth). He had written screenplay for about 20 films. He was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

May 19 - Vijay Tendulkar died at the age of 80 in Pune. He was a Marathi playwright, movie and television writer, literary essayist, political journalist, and social commentator. He received Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, and National Film Award for Best Screenplay for the film Manthan.

June 27 - Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw (Sam Bahadur) died. He was the Field Marshal of the Indian Army. He was awaraded Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Military Cross.

August 1 - Harkishan Singh Surjeet died at the age of 92 in Noida, Delhi. He was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 1992 to 2005 and was a member of the party's Political Bureau from 1964 to 2008.

November 5 - Baldev Raj Chopra (B.R. Chopra) died. He was a director and producer of Bollywood films and television serials. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He is the elder brother of Yash Chopra.

November 19 - M. N. Nambiar (Manjeri Narayanan Nambiar) died at the age of 89 in Chennai. He was a Tamil film actor who was a famous for his roles as villain.
