December - Hari Singh passed away. He was the Inspector General of Forests of India from 1964 to 1969. He was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

January 8 - Mahadeva Subramania Mani died in Bangalore. He was an entomologist especially famous for his studies on high altitude entomology.

January 18 - Harivansh Rai Bachchan (Harivansh Rai Shrivastav) died in Mumbai at the age of 95. He was a famous poet of Chhayavaad literary movement of early 20th century Hindi literature. He is the father of Bollywood super star Amitabh Bachchan.

July 14 - Leela Chitnis died in Danbury, Connecticut at the age of 93. She was an early actress in the Indian film industry. She was the first Indian film star to endorse the popular Lux soap brand, until then only top Hollywood heroines did that.

July 29 - Johnny Walker (Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi) died in Mumbai. He was a Bollywood actor famous for his comedy roles. He acted in more than 300 films.

October 25 - Pandurang Vaijnath Shastri Athavale died at the age of 83 in Mumbai. He was a philosopher, spiritual leader, social reformer and Hinduism reformist. He founded the Swadhyay Parivar organization. He received Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, and Padma Vibhushan.

December 21 - Ganapathi Venkatrama Iyer (G. V. Iyer) died. He was a famous film director and actor. He was nicknamed Kannada Bheeshma. He was the only person who made movies in Sanskrit. He made Adi Shankaracharya which won four National Film Awards.
