December - Chandrakant Mandare died. He was a well-known Marathi film actor and an artist. He was a master in paintings and powder shading.

May 7 - Malati Vishram (Balutai Khare) Bedekar died at the age of 96. She was a Marathi writer. She was the first prominent feminist writer in Marathi literature.

May 13 - R. K. Narayan (Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami) died at the age of 94 in Chennai. He was a author of the famous series of books about people and their interactions in an imagined town in India called Malgudi. He received Padma Vibhushan, Sahitya Akademi Award, AC Benson Medal, and Padma Bhushan.

July 21 - Sivaji Ganesan (Viluppuram Chinnaiahpillai Ganesan Manrayar) died at the age of 72 in Chennai. He was a stage and film actor. He has acted in about 300 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. He was awarded Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke Award.

October 27 - Pradeep Kumar (Pradeep Batabyal) died at the age of 76 in Kolkatta. He was a Bengali and Hindi actor.

December 5 - Dharam Singh died in Chandigarh. He was a field hockey player who was part of the gold medal winning team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. He was the team coach of the team that won the gold medal at Tokyo in 1964.

December 10 - Ashok Kumar (Kumudlal Ganguly, also known as Dadamoni) died at the age of 90 in Mumbai. He was a famous Bollywood actor. He received Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan Award.
