November 6 - Jyoti Basu's term as the Chief Minister of West Bengal ends. He served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister of any state of India.

May 6 - Balivada Kantha Rao died. He was a Telugu novelist and playwright. Many of his plays were broadcasted on All India Radio and Doordarshan.

July 10 - Vakkom Majeed (S. Abdul Majeed) died at the age of 90 in Vakkom, Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala. He was a freedom fighter, politician and a former member of the Travancore-Cochin State Assembly.

August 5 - Lala Amarnath (Nanik Amarnath Bhardwaj) was born. He was the first cricketer to score a Test century for the Indian cricket team, which he achieved on debut. He was independent India's first Test captain.

November 7 - Chidambaram Subramaniam (known as CS) died at the age of 90. He was independence activist, state minister, central minister and governor of state. He received Bharat Ratna in 1998.
