October 18 - Vilasrao Deshmukh's first term as Chief Minister of Maharashtra begins.

December 31 - Five hijackers, who had been holding 155 hostages on an Indian Airlines plane, leave the plane with two Islamic militants that they had demanded be freed.

January 10 - Sanjeev Nanda (business man) kills three policemen in New Delhi with his car, for which he was later acquitted.

Famous Deaths

August 6 - Shri Kalpnath Rai was died at the age of 58. He was a member of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. He was minister at the centre and was a senior Congress Leader.

August 10 - Acharya Baldev Upadhyaya died at the age of 99 at Varanasi. He was a renowned Hindi, Sanskrit scholar, literary historian, essayist and critic. He wrote numerous books, collections of essays and a historical outline of Sanskrit literature. He was honoured with Padma Bushan Award.

October 2 - Rappal Sangameswaraier Krishnan died. He was a great scientist and researcher.

November 6 - C. R. Kesavan Vaidyar died in Irinjalakuda. He was an industrialist, social worker and a Ayurvedic Vaidyar. He was follower of Sree Narayana Guru. The famous "Chandrika" ayurvedic soap was his idea. He started manufacturing the soap from Irinjalakuda.
