January 4 - Rahul Dev Burman was died in Mumbai at the age of 54. He was a legendary Bollywood music director. He was the son of the music director Sachin Dev Burman. He composed music for 331 films.

January 8 - Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal (Sage of Kanchi) passed away at the age of 99 at Kanchi mutt. He was the 68th Jagadguru in the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. He is usually referred to as Paramacharya, Mahaswami or Maha Periyavaal.

January 15 - Shri Harilal Upadhyay died in Paddhari, Gujarat. He is a Gujarati author, considered as one of the all-time great authors in the Gujarati language. He wrote historical novels, social novels, short story collections, biographies, the great Mahabharat series, children's literature, poems and Plays.

June 22 - L. V. Prasad (Akkineni Lakshmi Vara Prasada Rao) died at the age of 86. He was a film producer, actor, director, cinematographer and businessman. He was one of the pioneers of Indian cinema and received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

December 25 - Former President Giani Zail Singh was died in Chandigarh aged 78. He was the seventh President of India (1982 to 1987). He also had held the positions Minister of Home Affairs and Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement.
