December - Ram Nath Kak died. He was a Kashmiri veterinarian whose autobiography Autumn Leaves is one of the most vivid portraits of life in 20th century Kashmir and has become a sort of a classic.

August 3 - Chinmayananda Saraswati (known as Swami Chinmayananda and born Balakrishna Menon) died at the age of 77 in San Diego, California, U.S.A. He was a spiritual leader and teacher who inspired the formation of Chinmaya Mission in 1953 to spread the message of Vedanta.

August 19 - Utpal Dutt died at the age of 64 in Kolkata. He was a actor, director, and writer-playwright. He was an actor in Bengali theatre. He acted in more than 100 Bengali and Hindi films. He is remembered for his roles in Hrishikesh Mukherjee films like Gol Maal (1979).

November 29 - J. R. D. Tata (Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata) died at the age of 89 in Geneva, Switzerland. He was a businessman who was Chairman of Tata Group. He was the India's first licensed pilot. He was awarded the French Legion of Honour (highest civilian award in France) and Bharat Ratna.
