January 14 - Guru Mani Madhava Chakyar died at the age of 90. He was a master performance artist and Sanskrit scholar. He is regarded as the greatest Chakyar Koothu and Koodiyattam (ancient Sanskrit drama theatre tradition) artist of modern times. He received Padma Sri Award, Sangeet Natak Akademy Award and Sangeet Natak Akademy Fellowship.
March 29 - Adoor Bhasi (K. Bhaskaran Nair) died at the age of 63. He was a Malayalam actor and director. Adoor Bhasi was a famous comedian in Malayalam films.
April 13 - Sundaram Balachander died at the age of 63. He was a self-taught veena player and film producer, director, music director, actor, singer, playback singer and dancer. He received Padma Bhushan from Government of India.
June 2 - Shriram Sharma passed away. He was a social reformer, philosopher, visionary of the New Golden Era, and founder of "All World Gayatri Pariwar", which has its headquarters at Shantikunj, Haridwar.
October 21 - Shrii Shrii Anandamurti (Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar) died at the age of 69 in Kolkata. He was a philosopher, author, social revolutionary, poet, composer, and linguist. He was the founder of Ananda Marga, a spiritual and social organization that offers instruction in meditation and yoga.
November 7 - Lawrence George Durrell died at the age of 78. He was an expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer. His most famous work is the tetralogy the Alexandria Quartet.
December 25 - Chandrakant T. Patel died. He was a cotton scientist who developed the world's first ever commercial cotton hybrid, known as Hybrid-4 (Sankar-4), in 1970, which was later cultivated commercially in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
