December - Ahmad Siddiq (known by his pen name Majnun Gorakhpuri) died. He was an Urdu short story (Afsana) writer, poet and literary critic.

August - Mahendra Lal Wadhwa died in Delhi. He was a freedom fighter from the town of Muzafargarh. He was awarded the Tamrapatra in 1972.

October 29 - Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay died at the age of 85. She was a social reformer and freedom fighter. Several cultural institutions in India today are established due to her efforts, like the National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Central Cottage Industries Emporium, and the Crafts Council of India. She received Ramon Magsaysay Award, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.

December 24 - Jainendra Kumar died at the age of 83. He was a prominent Hindi writer of 20th century. He was awarded Padma Bhushan and Sahitya Akademi Award and the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.
