February 8 - Saint Alphonsa, Sister Alphonsa Muttathupadathu, was Beatified in Kottayam, Kerala, India by Pope John Paul II. She became first woman of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint.

January 5 - Deepika Padukone was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is a Bollywood actress and model. She also appeared in Tamil and Kannada films. She is the daughter of badminton player Prakash Padukone. She received Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for her role in her Bollywood debut film Om Shanti Om.

July 6 - Babu Jagjivan Ram (popularly known as Babuji) died at the age of 78. He was a freedom fighter, social reformer, and politician. He was Deputy Prime Minister of India. He also held the portfolio of Minister of Defense.

December 31 - Raj Narain was died in New Delhi. He was the Minister of Health during Morarji Desai's ministry. Raj Narain was the only politician who defeated Indira Gandhi in the 1977 Lok Sabha elections in Rai Bareli.
