January 7 - Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu was born in New Delhi. She has acted in Telugu, Bengali and Tamil films. She was a successful model before she began her career in acting. She won Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
February 9 - Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay (pen name Banaphul) died at Calcutta at the age of 79. He is a famous Bengali author, playwright and poet. He is most noted for his short vignettes, often just half page long.
May 19 - Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi died at the age of 71 in Delhi. He was a Hindi novelist, literary historian, essayist, critic and scholar. He received Sahitya Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan.
August 27 - Lord Mountbatten (Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas George Mountbatten) died. He was the last Viceroy of India and the first Governor-General of the independent Union of India.
December 4 - Dhyan Chand died at the age of 74 in Delhi. He was field hockey player who played for India and widely regarded as the greatest player of all time. He was in the India team that won three Olympic gold medals. Chand's birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. He received Padma Bushan.
