January 25 - Himachal Pradesh became the 18th Indian state and East Punjab is reduced to its current form as Doaba.

April 19 - The provisional government of Bangladesh exiled fleed to West Bengal.

August 25 - East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and eastern Bengal are flooded and thousands of people flee the area.

September 29 - A cyclone in the Bay of Bengal in Orissa State caused death of 10,000.

December 3 - The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 began as Pakistan attacks nine Indian airbases. The next day India launched a massive invasion of East Pakistan.

December 18 - Barkha Dutt, a television journalist and columnist was born in New Delhi. She is currently the group editor with NDTV (as of December 2012). She received Padma Shri Award in 2008.

December - Keshavrao Date died. He was an actor who worked in both silent and sound movies.

November 17 - Debaki Bose (Debaki Kumar Bose) died on 17 November 1971 in Calcutta. He was a top director, writer, actor of Bengali cinema. He is known for his innovative use of sound and music in Indian Cinema.

December 30 - Vikram Sarabhai (Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai) was died at Halcyon Castle in Thiruvananthapuram at age 52. He was a physicist. He is considered to be the father of the Indian space program. He received Padma Bhushan in 1966 and Padma Vibhushan (posthumously) in 1972.
