January 6 - A.R. Rahman (Allahrakka Rahman and born as A. S. Dileep Kumar) was born in Madras. He has composed music for Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Hollywood movies. He has won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, four National Film Awards, 15 Filmfare Awards, 13 Filmfare Awards South and many other awards.

January 10 - Murali Nair was born in Anandapuram, Kerala. He is a film director and screenwriter. His film Marana Simhasanam won the Camera d'Or Award.

December - Devarakonda Balagangadhara Tilak died. He was a Telugu poet, novelist and short story writer.

January 11 - Lal Bahadur Shastri was died at the age of 61 in Tashkent, Uzbek SSR, Soviet Union. He was the second Prime Minister of India. He also held the positions of Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of External Affairs. He received Bharat Rantna.
