April 14 - Mokshagundam Visveswaraiah died at Bangalore. He was a notable engineer, scholar, statesman and the Diwan of Mysore. He received Bharat Ratna.

June 11 - Chhabi Biswas died in Kolkata at the age of 61. He was a famous Bengali character actor, primarily known for his performances in Tapan Sinha's Kabuliwala and Satyajit Ray's films Jalshaghar.

July 1 - Bidhan Chandra Roy died. He was the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. He was a physician and a freedom fighter. He founded three cities, Durgapur, Kalyani and Bidhannagar.

November 28 - Krishna Chandra De (K.C. Dey) died in Calcutta. He was a Bengali actor, singer and music composer and teacher. He was S.D. Burman's first musical teacher and mentor. He is famous for his Kirtan songs.
