Historical Events

July 9 - The Mattancherry council passed a resolution that was forwarded to the government requesting the formation of a Municipal Corporation by combining the existing municipalities of Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Ernakulam.

Famous Births

January 2 - Raman Lamba was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He was cricketer who played for India in four Tests and 32 ODIs. He died after he was hit on the forehead by cricket ball while fielding in a club match in Dhaka.

December 13 - Victory Venkatesh (Daggubati Venkatesh) was born in Chennai. He is a prominent Tollywood hero. He has acted in more than seventy films. He also acted in few Hindi films.

Famous Deaths

January 19 - Ram Chandra Gopal "Dadasaheb" Torne died. He was the first Indian to make an Indian-language feature film. He made his first film Shree pundalik in 1912, just about a year before Dhundiraj Govind "Dadasaheb" Phalke made his first film.

January 30 - J. C. Kumarappa (Joseph Chelladurai Cornelius) died. He was a economist and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He was a pioneer of rural economic development theories.

February 2 - Jagadguru Swami Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaja passed away. He was the Sankaracharya of the Govardhana matha of Puri during 1925-1960. He is famous for his book Vedic Mathematics.

April 20 - Pannalal Ghosh (Amal Jyoti Ghosh) died at the age of 48 in New Delhi. He was a prominent Bengali flute (bansuri) player and composer. He was a disciple of Allauddin Khan.

April 27 - Rajshekhar Basu (pen name Parashuram) was born. He was a Bengali writer, chemist and lexicographer. He was considered the greatest Bengali humorist of the twentieth century. He received Padma Bhushan.
