July 11 - Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu was born in Mumbai. He was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha from Rajapur constituency of Maharashtra. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant and member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

December 14 - Vijay Amritraj, a former tennis player, sports commentator and actor was born in Madras (now Chennai). He received Padma Shri in 1983.

Famous Deaths

May 5 - Sir Ramasamy Chetty Kandasamy Shanmukham Chetty died at the age of 60 in Cochin. He was a lawyer, economist and politician. He was the first finance minister of India after Independence. He was the Diwan of Cochin kingdom from 1935 to 1941.

November 22 - Sulaiman Nadvi died. He was a prominent Indian and Pakistani historian, biographer, litterateur and scholar of Islam. He co-authored Sirat-un-Nabi and wrote Khutbat-e-Madras.

December 10 - Abdullah Yusuf Ali died. He was an Islamic scholar who translated the Quran into English. His translation of the Quran is one of the most widely known and used in the English-speaking world.
