January 1 - Shaji Neelakantan Karun was born in Kollam, Kerala. He is a National Award-winning film director and cinematographer. His debut film Piravi (1988) won the Camera d'Or - Mention d'honneur at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.
December 28 - Arun Jaitley was born in New Delhi. He is a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha (as of December 2012) and in the past had held the portfolios as the Union cabinet Minister for commerce, industry, law and justice.
December - Rashid Jahan died in Moscow where she had gone for treatment for uterine cancer. She was a writer who started a new era of Urdu literature written by women. She wrote short-stories and plays.
January 5 - Victor Alexander John Hope was died at the age of 64 in South Queensferry, Linlithgowshire, Scotland. He was the Governor-General and Viceroy of India from 1936 to 1943.
March 7 - Paramahansa Yogananda (Mukunda Lal Ghosh) was died at the age of 59 in Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles, California, U.S. He was a yogi and guru who introduced many westerners to the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga through his book named Autobiography of a Yogi.
October 16 - Syed Ghulam Bhik Nairang (Meer Nairang) died. He was a lawyer, poet and prominent Indian Muslim leader. He held office with the All-India Muslim League in pre-partition India.
