December - A modern centre for Pali (Theravadin) Buddhist studies was founded nearby the site of Nalanda University by Bhikshu Jagdish Kashyap named Nava Nalanda Mahavihara.

May - Rajendra Prasad, President of India, performed the installation ceremony for the temple at Somnath.

Famous Births

January 1 - Bollywood actor Nana Patekar (Vishwanath Nana Patekar) was born in Murud-Janjira, Maharashtra. He won one National Film Award for Best Actor and two National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor. He has also won many Filmfare Awards.

Famous Deaths

February 15 - Stephen Hector Taylor-Smith died at the age of 60. He was a rocket scientist who developed techniques in delivering mail by rocket. He was the most innovative of the early rocket pioneers.

December 16 - Amy Wilson Carmichael, a Protestant Christian missionary in India, was died at the age of 83. She opened an orphanage and founded a mission in Dohnavur, Tamil Nadu and served in India for 55 years and wrote many books about the missionary work there.
