January 1 - Deepa Mehta was born in Amritsar. She is an Indo-Canadian film director and screenwriter best known for her films Fire, Earth, and Water. She was awarded Genie Award.

January 14 - Jagadguru Rambhadracharya (Giridhar Mishra) was born in Shandikhurd, Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh. He is a Hindu religious leader. He is one of the four incumbent Jagadguru Ramanandacharya, and has held this title since 1988.

December 16 - India had military victory over Pakistan in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. This day is celebrated as Vijay Diwas (Victory Day) every year.

April 14 - Spiritual master Ramana Maharshi (Venkataraman Iyer) was died at Sri Ramana Ashram in Arunachala at age 70.

June 24 - Darwan Singh Negi VC was born. He received Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry to be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was a Naik in the 1st Battalion, 39th Garhwal Rifles, British Indian Army during the First World War.

December 5 - Sri Aurobindo (Aurobindo Ghosh) died at the age of 78 in Pondicherry, French India. He was a nationalist, freedom fighter, philosopher, yogi, guru, and poet. In 1926, with the help of his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa, he founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

December 15 - Sardar Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel was died in Mumbai at the age of 75. He was freedom figher and deputy prime minister of India and Minister of Home Affairs.
