June 1 - Chhotalal Khovshaldan Desai became first Chief Commissioner of Kutch State.

September 16 - Indian Army moved in to Hyderabad State from five fronts. Four days later, the Hyderabad forces surrendered.

October 15 - Varanasi was ceded to the Union of India.

January 7 - Shobhaa De (Shobha Rajadhyaksha) was born in Mumbai. She is a columnist and novelist. She was a model before she began her career in journalism. She founded and edited three magazines of Stardust, Society, and Celebrity.

Famous Deaths

January 30 - Mahatma Gandhi was shot by Nathuram Godse while he was walking to a platform from which he was to address a prayer meeting.

February 1 - Jatindramohan Bagchi died. He was a Bengali poet and editor.

August 9 - Yellapragada Subbarao died at the age of 53. He was a biochemist who discovered the function of adenosine triphosphate as an energy source in the cell, and developed methotrexate for the treatment of cancer.

September 11 - Muhammad Ali Jinnah died. He was a lawyer, politician and statesman, and the founder of Pakistan. He was the leader of the All-India Muslim League from 1913 until Pakistan's independence and Pakistan's first Governor-General.
