Famous Births

January 8 - Jyotindra Nath Dixit was born in Chennai. He was a diplomat who served as Foreign Secretary. He was the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the time of his death.

December 25 - Indian-born film Hollywood producer and director Ismail Merchant was born in Bombay. He was partner in Merchant Ivory Productions, a Hollywood production company. He received Padma Bhushan Award in 2002.

Famous Deaths

Ardeshir Burjorji Sorabji Godrej dead. He was a businessman who co-founded the Godrej Brothers Company, the precursor of the Godrej Group of companies.

August 13 - Bhikaiji Rustom Cama died at the age of 74 in Bombay. She was a prominent freedom fighter.

September 19 - Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande died at the age of 76. He was a musicologist who wrote the first modern treatise on Hindustani Classical Music.

October 8 - Munshi Premchand was born. He was a writer famous for his modern Hindi-Urdu literature. He is one of the most famous Hindi-Urdu writers.
