December 17 - Freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru assassinated British police officer James Saunders in Lahore, Punjab in response to the death of Lala Lajpat Rai at the hands of the police.

January 7 - Vijay Tendulkar was born. He was a Marathi playwright, movie and television writer, literary essayist, political journalist, and social commentator. He received Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, and National Film Award for Best Screenplay for the film Manthan.

January 20 - Qurrat-ul-Ain Haider was born. She was a Urdu novelist and short story writer. She is famous for her novel "Aag Ka Darya".

April 27 - J. V. Somayajulu (Jonnalagadda Venkata Somayajulu) was born. He was a Telugu theatre and film actor. He is remembered for his role as Sankar Sastry in the Telugu film Shankarabharanam.

September 12 - M.V. Rajasekharan was born. He is Member of the Legislative Council of Karnataka. He was formerly the Minister of state for Planning, Government of India.

October 1 - Sivaji Ganesan (Viluppuram Chinnaiahpillai Ganesan Manrayar) was born. He was a stage and film actor. He has acted in about 300 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. He was awarded Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke Award.

November 19 - Dara Singh (Deedar Singh) was born in Dharmuchak, Punjab, British India. He was a wrestler and actor. He acted in Punjabi and Hindi films and in television. He was the Rajya Sabha MP between 2003 and 2009. He was also president of the Jat Mahasabha.

Famous Deaths

July 1 - Nanda Kishore Bal was born at Kusupur village, Cuttack district, Orissa. He was a poet of the era of initial modernity in Oriya poetry. He is popularly known as "Palli Kabi" (the poet of rural life).
