K. T. Muhammed (popularly known as KT) was born. He was a Malayalam playwright and screenwriter. His famous works include Idhu Bhumiyanu (This is the Earth). He had written screenplay for about 20 films. He was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
J. P. Chandrababu (Joseph Panimayadas Rodriguez Chandrababu) was born at at Tuticorin. He was a famous Tamil film comedian-actor, singer and dancer.
January 13 - Bhau Kalchuri (Vir Singh Kalchuri) was born. He is an author, poet, trust administrator, and one of Meher Baba's mandali (close disciples). Bhau Kalchuri is the principal biographer of Meher Baba's life.
January 18 - Sundaram Balachander was born in Madras. He was a self-taught veena player and film producer, director, music director, actor, singer, playback singer and dancer. He received Padma Bhushan from Government of India.
January 24 - J. Om Prakash was born. He is a Bollywood producer. He is the father-in-law of Bollywood actor, director and producer Rakesh Roshan and grandfather of Bollywood hero Hrithik Roshan.
February 28 - Krishan Kant was born. He was the tenth Vice President of India from 1997 until his death. He also held the positions of Governor of Tamil Nadu and Governor of Andhra Pradesh.
March 2 - Adoor Bhasi (K. Bhaskaran Nair) was born. He was a Malayalam actor and director. Adoor Bhasi was a famous comedian in Malayalam films.
July 1 - Chandra Shekhar Singh was born. He was the eighth Prime Minister of India. He also held the positions of Minister of Defence and Minister of Home Affairs.
July 3 - Balivada Kantha Rao was born. He was a Telugu novelist and playwright. Many of his plays were broadcasted on All India Radio and Doordarshan.
August 26 - Bansi Lal was born in Golagarh village in Bhiwani district of Haryana. He was a freedom fighter and Chief Minister of Haryana. He served three separate terms as Chief Minister of Haryana.
November 8 - Lal Krishna Advani was born in Karachi, British India. He is a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He served as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the 10th Lok Sabha and 14th Lok Sabha.
December 25 - Sarangi player Pandit Ram Narayan was born in Udaipur, Mewar, British India. He popularised the bowed instrument sarangi as a solo concert instrument in Hindustani classical music. He received Padma Vibhushan in 2005.
December 27 - Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Nityanand Swami was born at Narnol, Haryana. He was the first chief minister of the state.
February 5 - Inayat Khan died at the age of 44. He was the founder of The Sufi Order in the West in 1914 (London) and teacher of Universal Sufism.
June 3 - Henry Charles Keith Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne died. He was a British politician and Irish peer who served as the Viceroy of India.
December 17 - Freedom fighter Rajendranath Lahiri was hanged to death in Gonda jail of Uttar Pradesh two days before the scheduled date.
December 18 - Freedom figther Ram Prasad Bismil was hanged at Gorakhpur Jail, United Province, British India. He participated in Mainpuri Conspiracy of 1918, and the Kakori conspiracy of 1925 against British Empire.
