March 10 - Maj-General Ranjit Lal Jetley was born. He is a retired soldier and scientist. He served in World War II and the 1947 Indo-Pakistani War. His innovations include an 105 mm light field gun and upgunning of the Sherman tanks.

March 21 - Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi (Nirmala Srivastava) was born. She was the founder of Sahaja Yoga, a meditation technique and new religious movement. Sahaja Yoga is practiced and taught for free in over 140 countries.

May 14 - Mrinal Sen was born. He is a Bengali filmmaker. He made many award winning films. He received Dada Saheb Phalke Award.

May 28 - Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) was born in Nimmakuru, Madras Presidency, British India. He was a legendary Telugu film hero. He was also a director, producer, and politician who served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for three terms. He received Padma Sri.

July 9 - Kovilan (Kandanisseri Vattomparambil Velappan Ayyappan) was born. He was a Malayalam language novelist. He received Kerala Sahitya Academy award, Kendra Sahitya Academy award, Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, and Sahitya Academy Membership.

July 28 - Harris Sam Sahayam Lawrence was born. He was the Special Officer for restructuring Educational Pattern in Tamil Nadu and as Director of School Education, he planned and implemented the All India 10+2+3 pattern of education in 1978. He was conferred the title of "Father of Vocational Education in Tamilnadu".
