Historical Events

The Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VIII arrived in India. When he arrived in Bombay, there was widespread agitation and riots spread all over Bombay.

Non Cooperation Movement was started.

Khilafat Movement was started.

Singareni Collieries, coal mining company, was started during Nizam's rule in Telangana area of present day Andhra Pradesh.

December 23 - Visvabharati University was inaugurated.

Famous Births

Braj Basi Lal (B. B. Lal) was born in Jhansi. He is a prominent archaeologist. He was the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla, and also worked in for UNESCO committees. He received Padma Bhushan.

January 3 - Chetan Anand was born in Lahore, British India. He was an acclaimed Hindi film producer, screenwriter and director. His film Neecha Nagar received Palme d'Or award. He is the elder brother of Bollywood legendary hero Dev Anand.

January 15 - Babasaheb Anantrao Bhosale was born in Satara. He was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 21 January 1982, until 1 February 1983.

March 8 - Sahir Ludhianvi was born. He was a famous Urdu poet and Hindi lyricist who worked for Hindi films. He received Padma Shri.

April 14 - Subodh Mukerji was born. He was a famous Bengali film producer and director. He was the brother of the producer director Sashadhar Mukherjee.

May 2 - Satyajit Ray was born in Calcutta. He is regarded as one of the great masters of world cinema.

May 21 - Shrii Shrii Anandamurti (Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar) was born. He was a philosopher, author, social revolutionary, poet, composer, and linguist. He was the founder of Ananda Marga, a spiritual and social organization that offers instruction in meditation and yoga.

June 28 - P. V. Narasimha Rao (Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao) was born. He was a lawyer, politician and freedom fighter. He was the ninth Prime Minister of India from 1991 to 1996. He also held the positions of Minister of Defense, Minister of External Affairs, Minister of Home Affairs and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

August 21 - Devarakonda Balagangadhara Tilak was born. He was a Telugu poet, novelist and short story writer.

September 24 - Dhulipala Seetharama Sastry was born. He was a Telugu film and Stage Actor. He was popular for playing mythological roles and particularly the role of Shakuni.

December 7 - Pramukh Swami Maharaj (Shantilal Patel) was born. He is the current guru and fifth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan in the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha.

Famous Deaths

Ahmed Raza Khan Fazil-e-Barelvi (popularly known as Aala Hazrat) died. He was a Sunni Hanafi scholar whose works influenced the Barelvi movement of South Asia.

September 11 - Chinnaswami Subramania Bharati died. He was a Tamil writer, poet, journalist, freedom fighter and social reformer. He is popularly known as Mahakavi Bharathiyar. He is a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry.
