April 7 - Pandit Ravi Shankar born in Varanasi, United Provinces, British India. He was an musician and composer of sitar. He received Bharat Ratna and three Grammy Awards.

June 14 - Bharat Bhushan was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He was a Bollywood actor, scriptwriter and producer. He was remembered for playing title role in Baiju Bawra in 1952.

July 14 - Shankarrao Bhavrao Chavan was born. He was Chief Minister of Maharashtra for two terms. He also served as Finance Minister of India and Home Minister of India.

August 1 - Annabhau Sathe was born. He was a social reformer and Marathi writer.

October 19 - Pandurang Vaijnath Shastri Athavale was born. He was a philosopher, spiritual leader, social reformer and Hinduism reformist. He founded the Swadhyay Parivar organization. He received Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, and Padma Vibhushan.

October 27 - K. R. Narayanan (Kocheril Raman Narayanan) was born. He was the tenth President of India. He was the first Dalit and the first Malayali to become President.

November 17 - Gemini Ganesan (Ramaswamy Ganesan) was born. He was a Tamil film actor who was nicknamed Kadhal Mannan (King of Romance) for the romantic roles he played in films. He received Padmashree, Kalaimamani, MGR Gold Medal and Screen Lifetime Achievement Award.

Famous Deaths

April 26 - Renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan died in Madras at the age of 32. He made great contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. Ramanujan's birthday is celebrated every year as National Mathematics Day.

August 1 - Lokmanya Tilak (Keshav Gangadhar Tilak) died at the age of 64 in Mumbai. He was a nationalist, journalist, teacher, social reformer, lawyer and freedom fighter.
