Historical Events

February 16 - Rowlatt (Sedition) Committee submits its report. Rowlatt Bill introduced on Feb 16, 1919.

April 13 - At the Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab, British and Gurkha troops killed 379 Sikhs.

December 5 - The House of Commons passes the Montague Chelmsford Reforms or the Government of India Act, 1919. The new reforms under this Act came into operation in 1921.

Pratap Chandra Chunder was born. He was a cabinet minister with education and social welfare portfolios in the Morarji Desai Ministry from 1977 to 1980.

Mahipal (Mahipal Singh) was born. He was Bollywood actor who acted in many films of the 1950s and 1960s.

Jamuna Baruah was born in Agra. She was a heroine in Assamese, Bengali and Hindi films. She was the wife of famous actor director Pramathesh Barua.

January 19 - Dharam Singh was born in Gandiwind. He was a field hockey player who was part of the gold medal winning team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. He was the team coach of the team that won the gold medal at Tokyo in 1964.

March 5 - M. N. Nambiar (Manjeri Narayanan Nambiar) was born. He was a Tamil film actor who was a famous for his roles as villain.

May 1 - Manna Dey (Prabodh Chandra Dey) was born. He is a famous playback singer of Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, and Assamese films. He was honoured him with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

July 18 - Maharaja Sri Sir Jaya Chamarajendra Wodeyar Bahadur was born. He was the 25th and the last Maharaja of the princely state of Mysore from 1940 to 1950. He was also a philosopher, musicologist, political thinker and philanthropist.

August 12 - Vikram Sarabhai (Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai) was born in Ahmedabad. He was a physicist. He is considered to be the father of the Indian space program. He received Padma Bhushan in 1966 and Padma Vibhushan (posthumously) in 1972.

August 31 - Amrita Pritam (Amrita Kaur) was born. She was a prominent Punjabi writer, poet, novelist, and essayist. She has written more than 100 books, of poetry, fiction, biographies, essays, a collection of Punjabi folk songs. She received Sahitya Academy Award, Padma Shri, Padma Vibushan, and Sahitya Academy Fellowship.

December 4 - I. K. Gujral (Inder Kumar Gujral) was born in Jhelum, Punjab, British India. He served as the 12th Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998. He also held the portfolios of Minister of Finance and Minister of External Affairs in Central Government.

December 25 - Bollywood music director Naushad Ali was born in Lucknow. He received Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1982 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992.
