January 12 - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (Mahesh Prasad Varma) was born in Jabalpur, British Raj. He developed the Transcendental Meditation technique and was the leader and guru of a worldwide organization that has been characterized in multiple ways including as a new religious movement and as non-religious.

August 24 - Sikander Bakht was born. He was a politician and Freedom Fighter. He was one of the prominent leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

December 9 - E. K. Nayanar (Erambala Krishnan Nayanar) was born. He was the Chief Minister of Kerala for three times. He is the longest serving Chief Minister of Kerala. He was a member of the Politburo of CPI(M).

December 14 - B.K.S. Iyengar (Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar), an yoga advocate was born in Bellur, Kolar District, Karnataka. He is the founder of Iyengar Yoga.

July 22 - Indra Lal Roy died. He was the first Indian flying ace. He served in the First World War with the Royal Flying Corps and its successor, the Royal Air Force. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).

October 15 - Sai Baba of Shirdi left his world. He was a guru, yogi, and fakir who is regarded by his devotees as an incarnation of Lord Dattatreya.
