January 9 - Gandhiji arrives in India.

Famous Births

February 2 - Khushwant Singh was born. He is a famous novelist and journalist. He is a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan.

March 11 - Vijay Hazare (Vijay Samuel Hazare) was born. He was the captain of the Indian cricket team in 14 matches between 1951 and 1953. India won its first ever Test cricket win against England under his captaincy.

July 26 - Krishna Pattabhi Jois was born. He was a yoga teacher. He was a student of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, and taught at his school, the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore.

August 15 - Ismat Chughtai was born. She was a famous writer in Urdu known for her fierce feminist ideology.

September 17 - MF Husain (Maqbool Fida Husain) was born in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. He was a prominent painter. He also directed films. He received Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.

December 20 - Upendrokishore Ray was died at the age of 52 in Giridih. He was a famous Bengali writer, painter, violin player and composer, technologist and entrepreneur. He was the father of the famous writer Sukumar Ray and grandfather of the renowned film-maker Satyajit Ray.

Famous Deaths

December 19 - Freedom fighter Thakur Roshan Singh was executed by British at Allahabad (Malaka/Naini jail). He had participated in the Bareilly Goli Kand. Although he had not taken part in the Kakori conspiracy, but was arrested and given death sentence.
