Murad was born. He was a Bollywood character actor who acted in more than 100 films. His son Raza Murad is also an actor in Bollywood.

Hari Singh was born (1910 - 2003) was born. He was the Inspector General of Forests of India from 1964 to 1969. He was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

January 6 - G. N. Balasubramaniam (known as GNB) was born in Tanjore District, Madras Presidency, British India. He was a vocalist in the Carnatic tradition. He became the first superstar of Carnatic music.

January 30 - Chidambaram Subramaniam (known as CS) was born in Senguttaipalayam, Pollachi taluk, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. He was independence activist, state minister, central minister and governor of state. He received Bharat Ratna in 1998.

May 19 - Nathuram Godse (Nathuram Vinayak Godse) was born. He was the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.

August 19 - Saint Alphonsa, Sister Alphonsa Muttathupadathu, was born in Kudamaloor, Arpookara, Travancore State, British Raj. She became first woman of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint.

October 19 - Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, FRS was born in Lahore, British India. He was an Indian-American astrophysicist who, with William A. Fowler, won the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics for key discoveries that led to the currently accepted theory on the later evolutionary stages of massive stars. The Chandrasekhar limit is named after him. He was the nephew of Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930.

December 4 - R. Venkataraman (Ramaswamy Venkataraman) was born in Rajamadam, Tamil Nadu. He was a lawyer, freedom fighter and politician. He was the eighth President of India. He also served as Vice President of India, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Finance.

December 4 - Motilal was born in Shimla. He was a Bollywood actor. He won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award twice.

December 17 - Eknath Easwaran, a spiritual teacher, an author of books on meditation and a translator and interpreter of Indian literature was born in Kerala.
