David Abraham Cheulkar (popularly known as David) was born. He was a Hindi film actor. He acted in more than 110 films. He received Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1955 for his role in the film Boot Polish.

February 10 - Pisharoth Rama Pisharoty was born in the town of Kollengode in Kerala. He was a physicist and meteorologist, and is considered to be the father of remote sensing in India. He received Padma Shri from Government of India.

April 6 - Alagappa Chettiar (Sir K V AL RM Alagappa Chettiar) was born in Kottaiyur in the Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu. He was a businessman and philanthropist. He received Padmabhushan award.

June 14 - E.M.S. Namboodirippad, also known as EMS, was born. He was the first Chief Minister of State of Kerala.

July 16 - Aruna Asaf Ali (Aruna Ganguly) was born in Kalka, Punjab, British India. She was a freedom fighter. She received International Lenin Peace Prize, Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, Padma Vibhushan, and Bharat Ratna.

July 19 - Nalappat Balamani Amma was born in Punnayurkulam, Malabar District, Madras Presidency, British India. She was a poetess who wrote in Malayalam and was known as the Poetess of Motherhood. She received Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Akademi Award, Saraswati Samman, Asan Prize, and Ezhuthachchan Award.

August 9 - Vinayaka Krishna Gokak was born in Savanur, Haveri district, Karnataka. He was a major writer in Kannada language and a scholar of English and Kannada literatures. He recieved Jnanpith Award for Kannada language was Padmashree from the Government of India.

September 9 - Leela Chitnis was born in Dharwar, Karnataka. She was an early actress in the Indian film industry. She was the first Indian film star to endorse the popular Lux soap brand, until then only top Hollywood heroines did that.

October 28 - Kodavatiganti Kutumba Rao was born in Tenali, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh. He was also known as Ko Ku, was an exponent of the Telugu literature in the 20th century.

November 16 - Hafiz Mirza Nasir Ahmad was born. He was Khalifatul Masih III, head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

December 20 - Vakkom Majeed (S. Abdul Majeed) was born in Travancore Princely State, Madras Presidency, British India. He was a freedom fighter, politician and a former member of the Travancore-Cochin State Assembly.
