January 17 - L. V. Prasad (Akkineni Lakshmi Vara Prasada Rao) was born in Somavarapadu, Eluru, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. He was a film producer, actor, director, cinematographer and businessman. He was one of the pioneers of Indian cinema and received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

February 26 - Leela Majumdar was born in Kolkata. She was a Bengali writer. She received Rabindra Puraskar.

March 2 - Mahadeva Subramania Mani was born in Tanjore, Tamilnadu. He was an entomologist especially famous for his studies on high altitude entomology.

April 5 - Babu Jagjivan Ram (popularly known as Babuji) was born in Chandwa, Bhojpur District, Bihar. He was a freedom fighter, social reformer, and politician. He was Deputy Prime Minister of India. He also held the portfolio of Minister of Defense.

June 25 - Sucheta Kriplani (Sucheta Mazumdar) was born in Ambala, Haryana. She was a freedom fighter and politician. She became the first woman to be elected Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

November 8 - Raja Rao was born in Hassan. He was a writer of English language novels and short stories. He was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Award, Neustadt International Prize for Literature, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.

November 29 - Nagerkoyil Sudalaimuthu Krishnan (Kalaivanar and NSK) was born Nagercoil, Travancore. He was a prominent Tamil film comedian, drama artist, playback singer and writer in the early stages of the Tamil film industry.

December 15 - Swami Ranganathananda (born Shankaran Kutty) was born in Thrissur, Kerala. He was the 13th president of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. He received Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration and Gandhi Peace Prize conferred on the Ramakrishna Mission.

December 31 - Isha Basant Joshi (born as Isha Basant Mukand and published books under the name of Esha Joshi) was born in Lucknow. She was the first woman to be accepted as an officer in the Indian Administrative Service.

Famous Deaths

Radhanath Ray died. He was an Oriya poet of initial modernity era in Oriya poetry during the later part of nineteenth century, and is honoured in Oriya literature with the title Kabibara.

August 11 - Khudiram Bose executed. He was a freedom fighter. At the time of his hanging, he was only 18 years old.

August 24 - Shivaram Rajguru (Shivaram Hari Rajguru) was born at Khed near Pune. He was a freedom fighter. He along with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev took part in the murder of a British police officer J.P. Saunders.
